Passage Theater Company is preparing the world premiere of the new musical GROUP!, which explores the lives of six women who meet during therapy sessions. The show, with lyrics by Eloise Govedare, music by Aleksandra M. Weil and a book by Julia B. Rosenblatt, examines the moments of fear, celebration and all that happens between these women grappling with their mental health versus sobriety. Performances run May 5-22 at the Mill Hill Playhouse in Trenton, New Jersey. Media are invited to the performance on May 7 at 7:30 p.m.
“We are thrilled to present the world premiere of this important new musical that will challenge audiences to grapple with some tough questions,” said Passage Artistic Director C. Ryanne Domingues. “GROUP! asks if the current mental health care system can truly pave the way for long-term recovery. With an all-female cast and an all-female, non-binary production team, the show is exactly the type of work that Passage Theater strives to present work that is reflective of our culture and society today.”
Directed by Maria Patrice Amon, GROUP! Tells the story of five women from all walks of life who have been sentenced by the court to undergo group therapy. Jessica, a therapist in charge of facilitating the sessions, has never led a group before. Together, these six women from very different worlds come together to fight the great equalizer: addiction. As women wonder who will pass therapy and if any of them will fall off the proverbial train, they bond and learn to embrace the process.
The all-female cast includes Nicole Stacie as Sandra, Tamara Rodriguez as Ceci, Samantha Bruce like Victoria, Laura Turnbull as Dotty, Liz Barnett as Jessica, and Deja Fields as Everly. Sheela Ramesh is Music Director, Kayla Arrell as Set Designer, Carmen Amon as Costume Designer, Alex Mannix as Lighting Designer, Nina Field as Sound Designer and Ali Curth as Props Designer.
